Brief History of Tottenham Hotspur FC
Tottenham Hotspur FC was founded in 1882 by a group of grammar school boys from All Harrows Church. The club turned professional in 1895 and instantly attracted large crowds of supporters. Spurs won the FA cup in 1901 as a non-league side and the wife of Tottenham Hotspur director Morton Cadman began the tradition of tying ribbons to the trophy. Spurs reached the First Division in 1909 and finished as runners-up in 1922; three years after the Football League reformed following the War. Arthur Rowe became manager of Tottenham Hotspur in 1949 and he developed extremely successful 'push and run' tactics. Spurs flourished under this style of play and the club won the First Division title in 1951.
Tottenham's famous 'push and run' side later declined. Bill Nicholas took over as manager in 1958 and he not only rebuilt the team, he led Spurs through one of their greatest ever eras. Tottenham Hotspur won eight major trophies in the space of sixteen years, including the First Division championship, three FA Cups, two League Cups, the European Cup winners' Cup and the inaugural UEFA Cup. In 1964, Spurs also became the first side of the twentieth century to complete the league-FA Cup double. The club has since enjoyed further cup success, including beating rivals Arsenal and Chelsea back-to-back to win the 2008 League Cup.
Did you know…
Tottenham Hotspur introduced their famous blue and white home kit towards the end of the nineteenth century. This was in homage to Preston North End FC - an incredibly successful football club at the time. Preston North End had been known as "The Lilywhites"and so Spurs were given the same nickname.
Tottenham have played at White Hart Lane Stadium since it was built in 1899. The ground was originally a disused nursery located behind a public house, which was owned by the Charringtons brewer chain. The owners realised that they could increase their profits by letting Tottenham Hotspur play here, as supporters would use the pub after matches. Spurs played a friendly against Notts County in 1905, which raised money to buy the freehold of the land. Tottenham subsequently became permanent owners of the ground. Renowned football architect Archibald Leitch was put in charge of a huge redevelopment in the early twentieth century. The ground currently has a capacity of 36,257 spectators and it hosted international football fixtures during the closure of Wembley Stadium.

The football book also contains a range of triumphs against London rivals, including the 5-3 win against West Ham in 1927, the 5-1 defeat of Chelsea in the 2002 Worthington semi-final and the 0-4 victory at Fulham in the 2007 FA Cup fifth-round. Another highlight is the 2008 League Cup. Spurs beat Arsenal 5-1 in the semi-final, followed by Chelsea 2-1 in the final.
