Brief History of Newcastle United
Newcastle United was founded in 1892, when Newcastle East End FC took over Newcastle West End FC following the financial difficulties of the western club. Newcastle United was elected into the Football League in 1893 and the club enjoyed much success in the early 1900s, winning the First Division title in 1905, 1907 and 1909. Newcastle United also formed an enviable record in the FA Cup, winning the competition three times before the Second World War and winning a further three Cups between 1951 and 1955. Newcastle qualified for the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup for the first time in 1968 and the Magpies won the competition the following year.
By the 1990s, the club’s form had dramatically declined. When former player Kevin Keegan returned to manage the side in 1992, Newcastle United was struggling at the bottom of Division Two. However, ‘King Kev’ turned the club’s fortunes around by implementing an attacking style of football. His Newcastle team was even labelled “The Entertainers" by Sky television and football fans. The Magpies finished as runners-up of the league in 1996 and 1997 and competed in Europe at the start of the new millennium, winning the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 2006.

Newcastle United FC is known as “The Toon" and “The Toon Army", both in reference to the way in which Geordies pronounce the word ‘Town’. However, the most common nickname for the club remains “The Magpies". A pair of magpies used to nest in the Old Victorian Stand of St. James’ Palace and many think this was the inspiration for the black and white kit of Newcastle United, which the club has used since 1894.
The Magpies have played at St James’ Park Stadium since the foundation of the club and it was previously the home ground of Newcastle West End FC. St. James’ Park is the oldest football ground in Northern England and currently boasts a capacity of over 52,000. The stadium is located in Newcastle city centre, adjacent to St. James’ Metro Station. The easy access has made it an ideal candidate for International football matches and the ground has also hosted rock concerts for acts such as the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and Queen.

There is also the signing of Alan Shearer in 1996, his incredible five goal performance against Sheffield Wednesday in 1999 and his final game for the Magpies in 2006.
