Manchester City Memorabilia and Gift Ideas

GoneDigging has a fabulous range of personalised Manchester City merchandise, including unique memorabilia and great gift ideas. Below you will find a selection of our most popular Man City gifts, in addition to a few interesting facts about the Blues.

Brief History of Manchester City FC

Manchester City FC was founded in 1880 when the cricket team of St. Marks’ Church began to play football. The Blues won the FA Cup in 1904 and 1934, and they twice finished as runners-up of the First Division before finally winning the title in 1937. By the time Man City celebrated a third FA Cup win in 1956, the club had begun to use the Revie Plan. This was a variation of the tactical system that had been employed by the Hungarian national team in a stunning 6-3 win over England. Manchester City used Don Revie as a deep centre forward and he would roam to central midfield to start attacks and draw centre backs out of position.

Joe Mercer was appointed manager of Manchester City in the 1960s and he led the club to its second First Division title in 1968. The Blues won an FA Cup, two League Cups and the European Cup Winners’ Cup during the next decade, before decline set in as the team began to age and disband. The club was revitalised in 2008 when Abu Dhabi United Group Investment and Development Ltd took over ownership of Manchester City. Overnight, Man City became one of the richest football clubs in the world.

Did you know…

Manchester City is also known as “The Blues", due to the colour of their home kit. The club originally played in scarlet and black, but switched to blue in around 1892. Although away colours have frequently changed, black and red has been the most traditional choice and was implemented by former assistant manager, Malcolm Allison. He hoped that the colours of the mighty AC Milan would inspire the side to success.

The Blues moved to the City of Manchester Stadium – also known as Eastlands – in 2003. The ground had originally been built for the 2002 Commonwealth Games and it hosted the athletics and rugby sevens events. When the Games ended, Man City paid approximately £35 million to convert the athletics ground to a football stadium. The inaugural game was a friendly against Barcelona, which took place in August 2003.The City of Manchester Stadium has a capacity of over 47,000 and it was chosen as the venue for the final of the 2008 UEFA Cup.

It also contains extensive coverage of league fixtures. Highlights include First Division titles, Second Division championships and many promotion-clinching games.
