Brief History of Everton FC
Everton FC was formed in 1878 at a local church school named St. Domingo. The team originally played at Stanley Park and with crowds flocking to watch the games, the club grew rapidly. Everton became founder members of the Football League in 1888 and won the First Division title three years later. The Toffees won four more top flight championships and two FA Cups before the outbreak of the Second World War and success continued for the club in the 1960s. Harry Catterick took over as manager in 1961 and Everton won a sixth First Division trophy in his second season in charge. This triumph was followed by an FA Cup win in 1966 and another league title in 1970. The Toffees also became the first British team to play in Europe for five consecutive seasons.
Further European success was achieved in 1985, as the club won the European Cup Winners’ Cup with victories over Bayern Munich and Rapid Vienna. The Toffees also won the league and reached the final of the FA Cup that year, completing a phenomenal season. Everton continue to be regarded as one of the best teams in English football, despite now competing with significantly less money than the “big four" clubs.

Everton FC has been given many nicknames throughout the years. For example, in the early twentieth century, the side was called "The Midnight Dribblers" as the club always trained late at night. Everton became known as “The Toffees" when the team moved to Goodison Park. However, the origin of the nickname is still debatable. Some insist it was a reference to the large Irish population on Merseyside at the time, but it was more likely due to a popular Toffee shop that was located close to the stadium.
Everton relocated to Goodison Park in 1892 following a dispute over rent at their previous ground, Anfield. This move led to the formation of Liverpool, who continued to play at Anfield and became Everton’s fiercest rivals. Goodison Park was the first purpose-built football stadium in the world. It has a capacity of over 40,000 supporters and one of the largest pitches in the Premiership. The stadium has held the FA Cup final and various international fixtures, including several in the 1966 FIFA World Cup.
