Brief History of Crystal Palace FC
Crystal Palace FC was founded in 1905 by workers of The Crystal Palace; a magnificent building on Sydenham Hill that housed the Great Exhibition. The club began competing in the Southern League, but enjoyed a fantastic FA Cup run in 1907, reaching the quarter-finals. The team caused a huge upset during this campaign, as they beat two-time defending champions, Newcastle United. The Eagles joined the Football League in 1920 and won the Third Division title at their first attempt. Crystal Palace entered the top flight for the first time in 1969, following a second place finish in Division Two and a sixteen-match unbeaten streak.
The Eagles stayed in the First Division for four years, before eventually succumbing to relegation. A fantastic partnership was soon formed between Ian Wright and Mark Bright and the strikers helped the club to return to the top flight in 1989. Just two years later, Crystal Palace finished the season in third place. The Eagles reached the semi-finals of both domestic cups in 1995, but also faced relegation. The club fought back admirably once again and Crystal Palace reached the top division in 1997. Promotion was guaranteed following an incredible goal in the ninetieth minute of the play-off final against Sheffield United. This dramatic match would become one of the outstanding moments in the club’s history.
Did you know…
Crystal Palace was originally nicknamed “The Glaziers", as the Crystal Palace was made of glass. In recent years, the team has been known as “The Eagles" and the club badge features an eagle standing on a football.
Crystal Palace FC moved to Selhurst Park in 1924. The ground is located in Croydon and was designed by renowned stadium architect, Archibald Leitch. When the Eagles played their first match, which was against Sheffield Wednesday, Selhurst Park contained only one stand and it remained unfinished due to industrial action. The stadium was finally developed in 1969 when the club was promoted to the top flight. It now has a capacity of over 26,000 and it is used solely by Crystal Palace, following previous ground-share arrangements with Charlton Athletic and Wimbledon.
