Brief History of Coventry City FC
Coventry City FC was founded as Singers FC in 1883. The club changed its name in 1898 and reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup in 1910, despite being a non-league side. After building steadily, the Sky Blues began to enjoy success in the early 1930s. Clarrie Bourton became one of the top centre forwards in the country, scoring forty-nine goals in 1932 and forty goals in 1933. Coventry City rose to the Second Division in 1936 and missed promotion to the top flight by just a single point in 1938. Although the Second War disturbed the side’s progress and the aging team began to disband, a boom in the Coventry Car industry during the 1960s led to increased profit in the area and an upturn in fortunes at the club. In 1967, Jimmy Hill guided the Sky Blues to the First Division. Coventry City reached European competition three years later, thanks to a sixth place finish in the league. The club won the FA Cup - their first major trophy - in 1987, following a phenomenal comeback against Tottenham Hotspur. The match was so entertaining it has often been described as one of the best FA Cup finals of all time.
Did you know…
Coventry City FC is nicknamed “The Sky Blues" due to the colour of the club’s home strip. The team has not always worn blue however, as the side played in red and black during the early seasons. Sky Blue kits were first worn in 1898 and they returned after a forty year absence in 1962, under the instruction of manager Jimmy Hill. The Sky Blue strip is also proudly worn by club mascot, ‘Sky Blue Sam’.
The club played at Highfield Road between 1899 and 2005. The stadium survived bombing by Luftwaffe planes in 1940 and a huge fire in 1968, becoming the first all-seated ground in England in the 1980s. During the following decade, directors decided that a larger stadium was needed to fit the club’s ambitions. Coventry City moved to the Ricoh Arena in 2005. The new ground was named after its Japanese sponsor and has a capacity of over 32,000 supporters. The complex features a hotel and casino and it has hosted concerts for Bon Jovi and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. The site was officially opened in 2007 by Dame Kelly Holmes and Sports Minister Richard Caborn.
