Brief History of Aberdeen FC
Aberdeen FC was formed in 1903 following the amalgamation of three city teams; Aberdeen, Victoria United and Orion. The club has gone on to become one of the most successful sides in the Scottish Premier League, winning over fifteen major trophies. The Dons have won every Scottish honour at least once during the 1950s, but this success was surpassed in the 1980s under the management of Sir Alex Ferguson. He took over as manager in 1978 and during his eight years in charge, Aberdeen won three league championships, five Scottish cups - including three in a row between 1982 and 1984 - and two European titles. Aberdeen’s biggest rivals, Dundee United, were also challenging for silverware during this period. The two clubs became collectively known as the New Firm during the 1980s, reflecting the brief end to the dominance of the Old Firm.
Did you know…
Aberdeen FC has been known as the Dons since at least 1913. Although there are various stories about the source of the nickname, it is likely that the name was just a shortened version of ‘Aberdonians‘, the correct term for people from Aberdeen. The team had previously been known as The Wasps or The Black and Golds. This was due to the black and yellow striped kit that the players wore at the time.
Home games have been played at the Pittodrie Stadium since 1899. The Aberdeen ground has an official capacity of 21,000 and it was modified to include hospitality suites in 1993. Pittodrie is particularly famous, as it was the first completely covered and all-seated stadium in Britain. It was also the first stadium to feature a dug-out, designed by trainer Donald Coleman in the early 1930s.
